Philanthropy Classification System

GeoTree

Developed by the Foundation Center, the GeoTree is a geographic classification tool that enables grantmakers to apply Geographic Area Served coding to their giving data. The Foundation Center classifies recipient organizations and the support they receive based on their geographic location and the geographic areas they serve. Although initially designed to standardize our own geographic coding system, the GeoTree also serves as a taxonomic standard and reference tool for the field. Organizations are encouraged to use the branch or branches of the tree that apply to their work, and may do so to the level of geographic detail that is appropriate for them.
